1964 Gibson Firebird V in great condition and perfect working order! Being Gibson's first neck through guitar and sporting a futuristic design from automotive designer Rob Deitrich, the Firebird was a drastic change from earlier Gibson products and subsequently become one of their most famous and collectible guitars!
This particular Firebird is great for both a player and collector! It features an original sunburst finish and original parts. The guitar has a very clear and resonant voice with a chime and cut that translates well through the two Firebird Mini Humbucker pickups. The bridge pickup has a great harmonic clarity and midrange kick, while the neck pickup has a warm tone. The guitar is professionally set up and plays as good, if not better than a brand new guitar!
The mahogany neck has a nice, round C profile with moderate depth and big shoulders that fill the palm comfortably. The profile gets noticeably deeper as you move up top the higher registers of the fretboard with just the right amount of chunk, yet still smaller than a 50's profile. A hand carved bone nut retained the original 1 11/16" nut width and a professional refret makes this Firebird extremely playable with solid intonation and no buzzing!
The Headstock features a set of Modern Aged Gibson Vintage Reproduction "Banjo" tuners and the original truss rod cover with "Gibson' Logo. There is light horizontal checking on the face of the headstock and a minor fracture repair on the back headstock joint. The fracture has been professionally repaired and finished with a clear nitro to a gloss sheen. The fracture at one point extended from the B string tuning peg mounting screw to the tiny nick on the edge of the bass side of the headstock face (SW of the "G" in Gibson.) The headstock has Not been off of the guitar and the break was quite slender and minor. Great care was taken to make sure it would glue back cleanly and securely so as to be stronger than the original joint.
All of the electronics work as they should, and consist of the original wiring harness (One '64 CTS Pot Code is still visible adjacent to the solder), modern witchcraft three way toggle, and a pair of Gibson Patent sticker Firebird pickups from 1965. The bridge pickup has been rewound. Maestro Vibrola (uninstalled, in case) with tailpiece. Original ABR-1 bridge with retainer wire and nylon saddles, Gold reflector cap knobs with silver caps. The Pickguard is from a 1970's firebird and since the switch position and mounting holes for the guard were slightly different than a 60's spec, a larger dress washer has been installed around the switch. This washer allows for the switch to be moved just slightly and accommodate the original 60's route without any cosmetic hints that the switch has been shifted north of the original 70s mounting hole. As it appeared that another Firebird pick guard or two have been installed in this guitar's lifetime as well, any extra pickguard mounting holes were doweled and finished.
Aside from the pickguard mounting holes and headstock joint, the nitro lacquer is 100% original and very vibrant with a ring of red still visible between the brown of the burst and the black edges. There is gorgeous horizontal lacquer checking across the entire body, with assorted nicks and small dings around the body contours, mostly around the edge of the back near the strap button. There's bit of light wear on the face of the guitar north of the tailpiece and a few marks and scratches from honest wear on the body as a whole, but overall this is a fantastic example of a rare Gibson model.
A modern Gibson Firebird, brown Hardshell case will be included with this Firebird. Any questions please feel free to let us know!
